veteran APP at Piedmont Atlanta. This phase focuses on learning standard
operating procedures essential for success in the ICU environment.

you master core pulmonary topics, develop basic note-writing skills, and understand
the fundamentals of patient admission and discharge processes.

  • Formal ICU Rotation - An 8-week intensive rotation (about 30 shifts) that begins with day shifts and gradually transitions to night shifts as your skills improve. This rotation immerses you fully into critical care practice under expert supervision.

  • Formal Graduation - During 3-4 night shifts, you will be shadowed by a veteran APP to demonstrate your clinical competency. Upon approval, you will begin solo shifts at your assigned Piedmont hospital, marking your transition to autonomous practice.

“It was the hardest and most rewarding things I’ve ever done. From the beginning,  I was drawn to this program’s strong emphasis on hands-on learning, supportive faculty, and the sense of community among residents. What stood out most was the mentorship: APPs were not only experts in their fields but also genuinely invested in our growth and well-being. This program pushed me to think critically and taught me how to remain calm during high-stakes situations. It shaped me into a well rounded and compassionate PA. I’m incredibly grateful for the training and mentorship that Piedmont provided for me. ”

“My ICU fellowship was both the most challenging and rewarding phase of my training. Immersed in high-stakes, fast-paced environments, I was pushed to the limits of my clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and emotional resilience. I cared for the most vulnerable patients—often in life-or-death situations—while learning to manage complex conditions, rapidly evolving emergencies, and multidisciplinary coordination. There were long hours, difficult cases, and moments of uncertainty, but every challenge brought growth. Over time, I developed not only technical proficiency but also deep empathy, grace under pressure, and an unwavering sense of purpose. The ICU taught me that even in the most intense circumstances, small victories and compassionate care make a profound difference. I came out of the experience with sharpened skills, a stronger sense of self, and a deeper commitment to patient-centered medicine. ”

An ICU APP fellowship is a post-graduate training program for physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) designed to develop clinical skills and confidence in managing critically ill patients.

The Pulmonary and Critical Care ICU APP Fellowship Program is open to board-certified/eligible PAs and NPs, ideally licensed in Georgia or eligible for it.

The program is 12 months and includes structured clinical rotations, procedural training, high-acuity ICU exposure, and mentorship from experienced critical care faculty.

Yes. The fellowship offers a competitive salary and benefits. Fellows are considered full-time employees with access to CME, mentorship, and institutional support.

Fellows receive hands-on training in intubation, central and arterial line placement, ultrasound, paracentesis, and other critical care procedures under supervision.

The Pulmonary and Critical Care ICU APP Fellowship Program is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and operates within the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s high-acuity medical ICU.

Yes — for many physician assistants and nurse practitioners, an ICU APP fellowship offers structured support, procedural training, and critical care experience that can be hard to gain on the job as a new grad. It also improves confidence and marketability in high-acuity settings.

Some ICU APP fellowships offer a full PA/NP salary with benefits, while others offer reduced pay in exchange for training. Programs like this one provide full-time salary and mentorship, so you're compensated while learning.

ICU APP fellowships can be competitive, especially at large academic centers. Having strong clinical rotations, letters of recommendation, and interest in procedures or physiology helps applicants stand out.

No. Most fellowships are designed for new grads or early-career APPs without prior ICU experience. A genuine interest in critical care and a strong foundation in pathophysiology are more important than ICU-specific experience.

APP fellows in the ICU typically learn intubation, central lines, arterial lines, bedside ultrasound, and management of ventilators, vasopressors, and critical care pharmacology.

An APP fellowship is a structured, mentored, time-limited program with a defined curriculum, rotations, and procedural training. On-the-job training varies by employer and often lacks the same depth, consistency, or protected learning time.
